This is the first message from the current President, D. Phillip Woodruff.

Editor's Message

This is the first IUVSTA News Bulletin of the new triennium, 1998 -2001. It contains much more material than previous Bulletins. You will find reports from ECM-81, GM-13, ECM-82 and IVC-14/ICSS-10 including a selection of photos from these events.

IUVSTA activities (Report on ECM 81 and ECM 82)

Summary of GM

This is a report on the 13th General Meeting of IUVSTA held in Birmingham on 2 September 1998. Delegations from the National Vacuum Societies, which comprise the membership of IUVSTA, heard reports of the Union’s activities during the past triennium, and elected the new Officers, ratified the new Councillors and approved the proposed budget and plan of activities for the next triennium. In addition to the general report on the meeting, you will find here links to other reports including those of the retiring and incoming Presidents, Secretary General, Treasurer, Scientific Director, Divisions and Committees.

IUVSTA Prize

The first award of the IUVSTA Prize was made to Professor J. Friso van der Veen of the University of Amsterdam for his pioneering investigations of surface and interface structure, disordering and melting through the development and application of Medium Energy Ion Scattering and Surface X-ray Diffraction.

International Vacuum Congress IVC-14/ICSS-10/NANO-5/QSA-10

This congress had 1219 attendees. The final report will appear in IUVSTA News Bulletin nr 145.

International Vacuum Congress IVC-16/ICSS-12 Congress 2004

It was decided at ECM-81 that this congress will be held in Venice, Italy in 2004
