Obituary of Gen'ichi Horikoshi
It is with great regret that we must announce the recent death of Professor Emeritus Gen'ichi Horikoshi of the National Laboratory for High Energy Physics in Japan. Professor Horikoshi passed away on September 12, 1999 at the age of 72 years. He made many brilliant contributions to vacuum systems of the storage ring of the Photon Factory in the National Laboratory at Tsukuba. He was well-known to IUVSTA Executive Council members, having been President of the Vacuum Society of Japan for eight years from 1988 to 1996 and National Councilor from Japan to the IUVSTA Executive Council for 9 years from 1989 to 1998. He will be especially remembered within IUVSTA as the Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of IVC-13 and ICSS-9 IUVSTA Congress held in Yokihama, Japan in 1995, and his efforts contributed greatly to the enormous success of these conferences.
Professor Roger Leyniers died at Jette-Brussels on 23rd September 2000 at the age of 74. Professor Leyniers was the 1st Belgian Councillor to IUVSTA from 1971-1974.
Professor Emile Thomas died on 14th January 2001 at the age of 93. In 1958, in conjunction with the ’58 World Exhibit in Brussels, he organised the 1st International Congress in Vacuum Science and Technology in Namur, and it was at this meeting that participants established the International Organisation for Vacuum Science, Techniques and Applications (IOVST), with Professor Thomas being its President. In 1982 this Organisation became IUVSTA, and the Belgian Vacuum Society (BELVAC) was founded. He served as Vice-President (1962-1965) and Secretary-General (1962-1974) of the IUVSTA. In 1989, Professor Thomas was made an Honorary President of the IUVSTA.
Madame Madeleine Berthaud died on 16th October 2001. She was President of the Société Française du Vide (SFV, French Vacuum Society) in 1960 - 1961. She was a Honorary Member and a Founder Member IUVSTA, in recognition to the pre-eminent role she played, together with Prof. Emile Thomas (see above), in drafting the original Statutes and By-Laws of the Union. She also served the IUVSTA as Councillor for France (1962-1971) and as Scientific Secretary (1965-1974).
