In 20 May 2004, the first national scientific

and technological gathering on Vacuum called

“Vacuum Experts and Producers” was organised

in the Institute of Applied Sciences of the Jahad

Daneshgahi in the Shahid Beheshi University

in Tehran. This event was an assembly among

scientific, industrial and educational represent-

atives for the purpose of promoting vacuum

science and techniques through education in

the nation. During this meeting, a session was

held for selecting the members of the Board of

Directors and Inspector of the VSI through voting

and election process. In addition, the aim of this

event was to recognize manpower, institutions,

technological capabilities and vacuum producers

of parts and systems, as well as the needs of

private industries in Iran.

Due to great potential activities on Vacuum andThin Films Science andTechnology in universities

and research institutes in Iran in late1990s, itwasnecessitated toestablishanational organisation to

manage and develop these operations. Subsequently, communication between Prof. Sohrabpour,

the president of Sharif University of Technology and Prof. M.G. Barthes-Labrousse, President of

International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique and Applications (IUVSTA) on 9 September

2002 took place requesting to host 14

th

International Conference on Thin Films (ICTF14) in the

university followed by immediate participation of Professor Moshfegh in the ICTF12 in Bratislava,

Slovakia which was held from 15 to 20 September, 2002. On the other hand, efforts to establish the

Vacuum Society of Iran (VSI) were persuaded by Prof. Mansouri, the President of Physics Society

of Iran (PSI) in 2001. But, the actual activities for establishing VSI were initiated on February 1,

2003 during the Sixth Condensed Matter Physics National Conference organised by PSI inYazd

University,Yazd city. A dozen of physicists and some engineers working on vacuum science and

technology held a meeting alongside with the conference and called for the establishment of

the Vacuum Society of Iran. Initially, all activities of the VSI were conducted in the PSI location

to promote and develop vacuum science and technology in the nation. This founding fathers

headed by Prof. Moshfegh have prepared statute of the society and worked on selecting the

official members of board of directors and inspector through election process. After several

intense meetings in the PSI, it was decided to organise an event to identify resources and provide

a forum for exchanging knowledge and experiences. The first International Workshop on Physics

andTechnology of Thin Films (IWTF) in Iran was organised by Professor Moshfegh in the Sharif

University of Technology inTehran from 22 February to 6 March 2003. The workshop with about

200 registered participants with many of them came from 26 countries including USA, UK, France,

Germany, Russia, Italy, India, Czech Republic, Croatia, Mexico, ended and some selected papers

co-edited by Prof. Moshfegh in a book entitled “Physics andTechnology ofThin Films” published

by theWorld Scientific Company in 2004.
