The origin of the Sociedad Mexicana de Ciencia

de Superficies y Vacío (MVS): Mexican society

of surfaces and vacuum is the result of an AVS

meeting in Detroit USA back in 1980. The idea

came from José Luis Morán Lopez, nowadays

President of the Mexican Academy of Sciences.

According to Juan Luis Peña, this happened while

having dinner in a Detroit restaurant. José Luis

told him about the necessity of having a society

gathering the Mexican Scientists interested in

Surface Science. In fact, these two persons were

the first (JLML) and the second (JLPC) presidents

of the MVS. It is important to note here that the

American Vacuum society (AVS) and the MVS

have been in close contact since that time and

the AVS has sent senior scientists to give lectures

or workshops almost continuously since the

mid-eighties. A first meeting was organised by

scientists from the Instituto Mexicano del Petroleo

(the Mexican Petroleum Institute) (IMP) and from

the Instituto de Física–UNAM Institute of Physics

of the National Autonoumous University (IFUNAM)

in Mexico City in 1980. This workshop was the

first initiative to promote the study of the, until

then non-existent, surface science in Mexico. It

was organised primarily for scientists returning

to Mexico after the culmination of their graduate

studies abroad. At that time there was no

involvement of industry in the development of this

activity.

In 1981, an intended second meeting was

cancelled and the IFUNAM group organised

a workshop of Surfaces in Oaxtepec State of

Morelos, with about 35 scientists present. In this

meeting, the necessity for the creation of a society

for surface studies in Mexico was discussed

and, as a consequence, a provisional committee

was appointed. This committee established the

statutes and undertook the legal work required

to formalize the new society. This happened in

a notary in San Juan de Letrán – a downtown

Mexico City famous street – with the participation

of: Enrique Sironi, Miguel José Yacamán, Ciro

Falcony, Olga Leticia Perez Ramirez, Alicia Oliver

and Juan Luis Peña Chapa, among others.

In November of 1982, the MVS was a reality and

it organised the first Latin American Symposium

of Surfaces in Puebla city. In 1983, October 5,

the legal status was conferred.
