Nowadays DVTS has about 120 members and is
governed by an executive council of 21 members,
which meets about 3 to 4 times per year. The
current president of DVTS is Janez Kovač.
DVTS is also a member of the Electrotechnical
Association of Slovenia.
The objectives of the DVTS are several fold.
The general goal of DVTS is to contribute to the
development of vacuum science and technique
in Slovenia. It offers education and support for
the application of vacuum technologies in the
industry and research institutions, promotes
cooperation among DVTS members and
collaboration with other vacuum societies at
international level. To achieve its mission the
Society undertakes a variety of activities including
organization of national and international
scientific meetings and workshops (such as
the Joint Vacuum Conference – JVC). On the
local level DVTS regularly organizes courses
on vacuum technology. An important activity
of DVTS is publishing technical and scientific
literature in the field of vacuum technologies
and history of vacuum-related research in
Slovenian language. The journal “Vakuumist”
published by DVTS contains vacuum related
scientific and technical articles in Slovenian
language. Since 1981, 37 volumes of journal
Vakuumist with 3-4 issues per year have been
published. The current editor of the journal is
Miha Čekada. DVTS organizes educational
courses related to vacuum science and vacuum
techniques. These courses are mainly intended
for young researchers and technical staff from
the industry. They are held regularly at the two
national institutes, the Jožef Stefan Institute and
at Institute of Metals and Technology, which have
long tradition on the vacuum-related research
and technology in Slovenia. The courses include
lectures about the basics of vacuum physics
and more advanced topics as well as practical
The roots of the Slovenian Society for VacuumTechnique (DVTS) date back to the year 1958
after the first International Congress on Vacuum Technique in Namur. At that time, Slovenia
was part of Yugoslavia, thus the origins of DVTS are related to the Yugoslavian Vacuum
Society. The DVTS played a crucial role in the formation of the Yugoslavian Vacuum Society
(later JUVAK). Slovenian vacuum experts, centred around the Slovenian “Institute for
Electronics and Vacuum Technique” in Ljubljana, established a Section for Vacuum Science
andTechnique after returning from the vacuum congress in Namur. This section, which was a
part of Electrotechnical Society of Slovenia was founded in 1959, and can be considered as
a predecessor of the present DVTS. After the independence of Slovenia from Yugoslavia in
1991, the Slovenian Society for VacuumTechnique (DVTS) was accepted in the IUVSTA as an
independent member at the General Meeting inThe Hague in 1992.
Important activity of DVTS is publication of technical and
scientific vacuum-based literature in Slovenian language.
A journal “Vakuumist” with vacuum-related topics is also
published by DVTS.
