The 15

th

 International Vacuum Congress

and the 11

th

 International Conference on

Solid Surfaces were hosted by the AVS in

San Francisco, USA, between 28 October

and 2 November 2001, in conjunction

with their own 48

th

 AVS International

Symposium and the 8

th

 International

Conference on Nanometre-Scale Science

and Technology.

The Congress was hosted by the

American Vacuum Society (AVS). The

Chair of the Organising Committee was

J. W. (Bill) Rogers Jr. and the Chair of

the Program Committee was Roger

Stockbauer. These meetings were held

under difficult circumstances as there had

been a major terrorist attack on the USA

on September 11, which caused many

intending-participants to cancel their

travel to the meeting at the last moment.

Never-the-less the meetings were held

successfully with 2789 registrants, with

862 from outside the USA, including 225

(26%) from Japan. 1755 papers were

presented in 16 parallel sessions, with

140 sessions in all. 450 papers had been

withdrawn.

A very comprehensive Equipment Exhibition

was held and at the conclusion of the

Congress the AVS made a donation of

US$ 40,000 to the Union.

There had been a number of new

features introduced at this Congress,

including provision for the replaying

of key sessions on locally available

video projectors. In addition, the

Proceedings were made available in

electronic format, with no hard copy

volumes being printed.

The 16

(IVC-16) and the 12

Society (AIV) at the Film Festival Palace

in Venice (Lido), Italy, between 28 June

and 2 July 2004, in conjunction with the

8

of the Italian Vacuum Society (AIV-17).
