The General Chair of the Congress

was Massimo Sancrotti and the Chair

of the Program Committee was Ugo

Valbusa. The congress was marked by

two special features: an International

Workshop on Science, Technology and

Cultural Heritage was held between

29 June and 1 July and a special session

dedicated to technology transfer was

held on 1 July.

The latter, named the STD Initiative on

Technology Transfer, was organised by

Massimo Sancrotti with 8 invited speakers

coming from Italy, Swiss, Germany, USA

and Japan. There was a total of over

1400 attendees, including 5 plenary

speakers and 105 invited speakers. There

were 55 countries represented among the

participants. The largest number came

from Italy, then from Japan, Germany and

France, with the number from each of the

other countries being less than 100 each.

Contributions were presented in 5 plenary,

92 oral (including 25 joints) and 4 poster

sessions. There were 63 exhibitors at

the Equipment Exhibition, which was

coordinated by Joris Cinquetti. At the

conclusion of the congress the organisers

made a donation of SFr 60,000 to the

IUVSTA.

As a consequence, the 17

th

 International

Vacuum Congress (IVC-17) and 13

th

 Inter

national Conference on Solid Surfaces

(ICSS-13) were hosted by the Swedish

Vacuum Society in conjunction with the

International Conference on Nanometer

Science and Technology (ICN+T 2007).

Three local conferences also joined: the

6

th

 Nordic Conference on Surface Science

(NCSS-6), the 22

nd

 Nordic Semiconductor

Meeting (NSM-22) and the 4

th

 Swedish

Meeting on Vacuum and Material Science

(SVM-4). These meetings were held from

2 to 6 July 2007 at Stockholm International

Fairs in Stockholm, Sweden. The General

Chair was Lars Westerberg and the

Chair of the Program Committee was

Ulf Karlson. The non-scientific aspects

of the congress were handled by a

conference organisation company, Congrex

Sweden AB. The congress has close to

2000 participants from 58 countries. The

largest number came from Sweden, then

from Japan and Germany, with the number

from each of the other countries being

less than 80 each. 5 plenary, more than

700 oral (including 138 invited) and over

1000 poster contributions were presented

during the conference. Special sessions

were held on education, fusion plasma,

advanced light sources, nanowires and low-

temperature scanning probe microscopy.

The Proceedings were published in the

Journal of Physics: Conference Series, but

covered only 358 presentations. A large

exhibition of scientific equipment was held

with 69 exhibitors. After the congress the

Swedish Vacuum Society made a donation

of SFr 60,000 to the IUVSTA.

The 18

th

 International Vacuum Congress

(IVC-18) and the 14

th

 International Confe

rence on Solid Surfaces (ICSS-14) were

hosted for the first time by the Chinese

Vacuum Society at the Beijing International

Convention Centre in Beijing, Popular Repu

blic of China, from 23 to 27 August 2010.

These meetings were held in conjunction

with the International Conference on

Nanometer Science and Technology (ICN+T

2010) and the 5

th

 Vacuum and Surface

In 2006, due to a strong overlap

between topics covered by the

International Vacuum Congress

and the International Conference

on Nanometer-Scale Science and

Technology (which merged with

the International Conference on

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and

Spectroscopy to form the Interna

tional Conference on Nanometer

Science and Technology (ICN+T)),

it has been decided to join IVC and

ICN+T when they were scheduled to

be held the same year.
