Science Conference of Asia and Australia

(VASSCAA-5). The General Chair of the

Congress was Jianguo Hou who also acted

as Chair of the Program Committee.

Session topics were organised in 9 sub-

conferences, following the IUVSTA divisional

structure, with an additional sub-conference

dedicated to biointerfaces. The total expected

number of presentations was1477. Of the

presentations 814 were oral communications

(including 5 Plenary, 17 Conference Plenary,

32 Keynote and 125 Invited Speakers) and

663 were posters. 576 communications

were originating from China, 369 from

Europe, 152 from Japan, 78 from USA,

68 from Korea and 234 from the rest of

the world. The conference was successful

in spite of an unexpected number of no-

show. In addition to the scientific program,

there was a very large and comprehensive

exhibition which attracted 139 exhibitors.

After the congress the Chinese Vacuum

Society made a donation of USD 40,000 to

the IUVSTA.

The 19

th

 International Vacuum Congress

(IVC-19) and the 15

th

 International Confe

rence on Solid Surfaces (ICSS-15) were

held at the Palais des Congrès in Paris,

France, on 9-13 September 2013, again

in conjunction with the International

Conference on Nanoscience and Techno

logy (ICN+T 2013). Four smaller international

meetings were associated: Innovations in

Thin Film Processing and Characterisation

(ITFPC 2013), Magnetron, Ion processing

& Arc Technologies European Conference

(MIATEC 2013), the 19

th

 International

Colloquium on Plasma Processes (CIP

2013) and Reactive Sputter Deposition

(RSD 2013).

A feature of this congress was that, for

the first time in the history of IUVSTA,

it was organised by a consortium of

9 European Vacuum Societies from

Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic,

France, Great Britain, Hungary,

Portugal, Slovakia and Slovenia. The

General Chair of the Congress was

M-G. Barthés-Labrousse (F) and the

Chair of the Program Committee was

F. Reniers (B).The non-scientific aspects

of the conference and the associated

exhibition were handled by the French

VacuumSociety on behalf of all partners.
