Sydney Horizon Fellowships are now open
The University of Sydney Horizon Fellowship Scheme has been launched today to empower the best and brightest emerging researchers to tackle our greatest challenges.
The Fellowships aim to attract and retain exceptional early and mid-career research leaders from around the world to drive research excellence in strategically important areas with significant global societal impact.
The Sydney Horizon Fellowship Scheme aims to create a pipeline of excellence and societal impact, whilst building upon and amplifying the University’s existing strengths. Organised across the three linked themes of climate change, health, and sustainability, Fellows will draw on and develop their disciplinary and multidisciplinary skills, contributing to a cohesive and integrated research ecosystem that addresses these pressing challenges and advances potential solutions.
About the Sydney Horizon Fellowship
The Sydney Horizon Fellowships will provide outstanding emerging researchers with a continuing position, commencing with a five-year research-focused fellowship program which includes a dedicated mentoring and training program, a competitive salary and generous research funding that surpasses any previous offerings in Australia.
This initiative is a cornerstone of the University’s 2032 strategy, which emphasises the importance of innovative research in addressing critical issues such as climate change, health outcomes, and sustainability.
The University of Sydney’s Horizon Fellowships are open to researchers from all areas seeking to advance potential solutions, which may include the development of novel technologies, biomedical, legal, business, design, policy, and political instruments.
In alignment with some of the University’s areas of interest, Fellows may develop new technologies to mitigate climate change, understanding the impact of climate on various sectors, exploring the role of technology in promoting health, and devising strategies to foster sustainability in agriculture, architecture, energy, finance, waste management, water, and transportation.
Fellows will create an integrated and cohesive community of exceptional researchers, who will have the opportunity to join existing world-leading research centres, build networks across schools and faculties, and receive mentoring from top leaders in their respective fields.
The fellowship scheme also upholds the University’s commitment to equity and diversity, aiming to recruit at least 50 percent female-identifying researchers and strongly encouraging applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers and those with lived experience of disability.
The University encourages researchers who share its passion for addressing the world’s greatest challenges to apply.
For more information on the thematic areas and details about the fellowship program, please visit the Sydney Horizon Fellowship website.

Quantum electronics in Germany – possibilities for PostDoc or Sabbatical or more
Here at TU Ilmenau in Germany, we have a new large national project QHUB (Quantumhub) dealing with superconducting electronics, superconducting sensorics, Josephson devices and single photon detection.
For this project we urgently need more researchers. We can easily hire young researchers directly via the project or we can help with applications to the Alexander-von-Humboldt Foundation (www.avh.de ). All the Humboldt funding are very prestigious and can help much in the personal academic and professional career.
For young researchers, there is the Humboldt Research Fellowship https://www.humboldt-foundation.de/en/apply/sponsorship-programmes/humboldt-research-fellowship.
For more experienced and renewed researchers (a nice possibility for a sabbatical also) there are the Humboldt Professorship https://www.humboldt-foundation.de/en/apply/sponsorship-programmes/alexander-von-humboldt-professorship or the Humboldt Research Award https://www.humboldt-foundation.de/en/apply/sponsorship-programmes/humboldt-research-award.
Additionally, there are more very attractive funding opportunities by EC (for all stages of the career), which can be discussed individually.
We can offer an excellent research environment here at TU Ilmenau, where in the Center of Micro and Nanotechnologies www.tu-ilmenau.de/imn we can offer a huge technology center with clean room area ranked among the top 10 of the world (just behind Princeton, Berkeley). www.macronano.de.We can fabricate and analyze superconducting devices.
